I have had the pleasure of knowing Gov. Sam Brownback since he served as our senator and would come to Garden City to ring the bell for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign, and I support his run for a second term.
Over the years, I’ve witnessed a servant of the people who worked tirelessly, with dedication and integrity to do the right thing for those he represents.
While serving as the board chairman for the Kansas Hispanic and Latino American Affairs Commission, I’ve worked with Gov. Brownback at The Hispanic Business Forum, which provides information and education to the Hispanic business community. He understands and believes small Hispanic-owned businesses are a vital part in building the local economy. Hispanics make up 11 percent of the Kansas population but just 2.4 percent of business owners and Brownback has encouraged them to start businesses with “zero income taxes” as an incentive.
While in Congress, Brownback was recognized for being a staunch supporter of the Hispanic community, particularly for work on civil rights, immigration, education and guest-worker programs, from The National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic-focused not-for-profit organization. Brownback also was instrumental in the appointment of Carlos Murguia as Kansas’ first Hispanic U.S. District Court judge in 1999, another example of his commitment to making the lives of all Kansans better.
Brownback truly cares about people, is willing to listen to areas of concern, and is not afraid to demonstrate his compassion. I hope you will join me in supporting Sam Brownback for a second term as our governor.
